My Real Journey from Web Dreamer to Cyber Duck (That’s Me 🐤)
Hi, I’m Aathil Ducky — not just a name, but a whole vibe. As a final-year Computer Science student at Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University of Sri Lanka, I’ve danced through multiple tech fields like a confused-but-determined techie squirrel. 🍪

The Web Dev Dream (Phase 1: The Hopeful Nerd)
After my A/Ls, like every enthusiastic teen, I started with the holy trinity of the web — HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I had dreams (some say delusions) of starting a web agency, becoming the next big thing in tech, and maybe owning a company called “Duckware Inc.” 🦆
I designed basic websites, built login forms, and even created my own portfolio. The excitement was real, but something always felt incomplete. I wanted something more… unpredictable.
The Tweet That Changed Everything 💻➡️🔓
One fine day, scrolling through Twitter (as one does during a “productive” coding session), I saw a tweet by a 16-year-old kid who hacked Red Bull. Yes, THE Red Bull.
That moment sparked a fire. I didn’t just want to build websites — I wanted to break them. (Legally, of course. Don’t arrest me.)
I stumbled upon Capture The Flag (CTF) competitions. They were exciting… but terrifying. Nothing made sense at first. It was like decoding a puzzle in a language made by aliens.
So, I decided to go back to square one and build a strong foundation.
- Networking basics
- Web security concepts
- Understanding vulnerabilities
- System internals and protocols
Slowly but surely, the fog began to clear.{}
Struggles? Oh, I Had Many…
Let me be real with you — I’m one of the most hardworking people I know. But I had a problem.
Consistency? Never heard of her.
My journey was like a tech buffet:
- A little HTML here
- A dash of AI there
- Sprinkle some cybersecurity
- Oh, let’s try data science today!
I became a beginner in everything and a master of nothing. I was learning… but I wasn’t growing. My confidence took hits. I kept doubting myself. And social media didn’t help either.
Everyone seemed like a genius while I was juggling five fields.
But the plot twist? That chaos actually helped me discover what I truly loved.
The Turning Point 🧠💡
One night (post 3 cups of tea and a quarter-life crisis), I asked myself:
What’s that one thing that excites me even if there’s no reward?
The answer?
Cyber Security.
- Reading about zero-days? Count me in.
- Watching ethical hacking documentaries? My popcorn is ready.
- Exploring OWASP vulnerabilities? Feels like detective work.
I realized that cybersecurity was more than just a career path. It was an adventure. It fed my curiosity and challenged my logic. That’s how I knew it was “the one.”
Cyber Security vs Artificial Intelligence Career: My Final Decision

Let’s break this down like a good vulnerability report.
Why I Chose Cyber Security 🛡️
- Real-world impact. You’re the shield against cyber threats.
- You learn by doing — scanning, exploiting, patching.
- The field evolves fast. Boredom? What’s that?
- I get to use cool tools like Nmap, Burp Suite, and Wireshark. Sounds like spy gear, right?
And let’s be honest — yelling “Access Granted” after a successful SQL injection feels so good.
Why AI Didn’t Win My Heart 🤖💔
I gave AI a shot. I really did.
- I played with data.
- Tried building ML models.
- Took online courses in TensorFlow.
But every time, my brain whispered, “Where’s the thrill?”
It felt like I was feeding data into a machine without understanding why. I needed more interaction, more unpredictability. More “I-just-hacked-something” energy.
Still, AI isn’t useless to me. In fact…
I became really good at using AI tools to assist my learning, automate tasks, and brainstorm ideas.
Note to all students: Learning how to use AI is just as valuable as building it.
So, Which Career Path Is Best — Cyber Security or Artificial Intelligence?
Let’s compare these two like a CTF scoreboard.
Choose Cyber Security if:
- You love hacking and solving logical puzzles
- You enjoy system-level work: ports, firewalls, servers
- You like working in blue teams, red teams, or purple teams (we got colors!)
- You enjoy a fast-paced, always-changing environment
- You want to protect real people from real threats
Choose AI & ML if:
- You enjoy math, statistics, and algorithms
- You love working with data and building predictive models
- You’re fascinated by neural networks and machine learning
- You dream of teaching machines to make decisions
- You’re patient enough to wait for model training (unlike me 🐢)
Where Do These Careers Stand in the Market?

Let’s talk facts. Both fields are booming.
Job Demand
- Cyber Security: Companies are desperate for defenders. Ransomware attacks are everywhere. Even small businesses need protection.
- AI & ML: Every industry is adopting AI. From healthcare to finance to TikTok algorithms.
Salary Potential
- Both offer excellent pay — especially if you specialize.
- Cybersecurity roles like SOC Analyst, Pentester, or Security Engineer are highly paid.
- AI roles like Data Scientist, ML Engineer, and AI Researcher also bag hefty salaries.
Skill Growth
- Cybersecurity needs critical thinking, scripting (Python FTW), and strong problem-solving.
- AI needs mathematical foundations, deep learning frameworks, and strong data handling skills.
But Here’s the Real Truth 😎
- There’s no “better” field.
- The best career is one that keeps you going — even when it’s hard.
If you’re not excited to learn, you’re in the wrong lane.
Both fields are competitive. Both demand commitment. And both can make you rich… or bald (from stress). Choose wisely.
My Advice to Future Techies 💬
Here are the golden eggs from this duck:
- Start broad. Explore every field.
- Pay attention to what makes you excited to learn.
- Don’t force yourself to follow trends. They change faster than JavaScript frameworks.
- Build projects. Fail fast. Learn faster.
- Learn to use AI. Even if you don’t build it, let it help you.
And most importantly:
Mastering one thing is better than knowing 100 things halfway.
Final Words From Ducky 🐤
I’m still learning. Still experimenting. Still questioning myself sometimes. But now, I’ve chosen to go all-in on cybersecurity.
This is my playground. My battlefield. My home.
So, fellow confused student, what’s yours?
